Yunyao Zhang: A Painter Who Trusts the Surface to Remember

In a nutshell: Yunyao Zhang (b. 1985, Shanghai) is a Paris-based painter who works in graphite and pastel on felt instead of oil on canvas, a material that embeds every mark permanently rather than allowing correction. His solo exhibition When the Surface Thinks opens October 30, 2026, at White Cube Hong Kong, presenting his Connector and Time series alongside studies of classical statuary, and runs through December 19.

A Surface That Won’t Let You Take It Back

Most painters get to change their minds. Oil dries slowly enough to scrape back, glaze over, start again in the same spot a dozen times. Yunyao Zhang works in a medium that refuses that mercy. Since the early 2020s, his primary surface has been felt, drawn on with graphite and pastel rather than painted in oil, and once a mark lands it stays. That single material choice is the engine behind When the Surface Thinks, his first solo exhibition at White Cube, opening October 30 at the gallery’s Hong Kong space.

An Academic Training Turned Against Itself

Zhang was born in Shanghai in 1985 and graduated in 2007 from the oil painting department at Shanghai Normal University’s Academy of Fine Arts, a program still shaped by the Soviet Realist teaching methods imported into Chinese art academies decades earlier. He later settled in Paris, where the French Beaux-Arts tradition, with its own rigid emphasis on figure drawing and classical proportion, added a second academic layer. Both systems taught him to render the human form with precision. His current work spends its energy undoing that precision, one memory-resistant mark at a time.

The Material That Refuses to Forget

Felt is an unusual painting support: unabsorptive, prone to pilling, nothing like the primed weave of canvas. Zhang works into it slowly, drafting and rubbing graphite and pastel until the surface builds a hazy, textured depth, often superimposing one image over another to produce something close to a photographic double exposure. He has described the process as a direct response to memory and its waning, arguing that felt’s refusal to absorb or forgive a mark is what gives the paintings their particular sense of time. Where oil lets an artist erase a false start, felt insists that every false start remains part of the finished picture.

From Shanghai Basements to a New York Group Show

Zhang’s early solo shows ran through independent Chinese spaces: Don Gallery and 01100001 Gallery, a 2013 Glenfiddich residency, a slot in Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai’s 2013 program. Perrotin gave him his first Hong Kong solo in 2017, and Paris’s Galerie Marguo has represented him since at least 2020. Since then the exhibition history has moved steadily toward Europe’s institutional circuit: the Lyon Biennale in 2022, a Louvre-co-curated presentation at the Musée Fenaille in Rodez, France, the Musée des beaux-arts de Caen in 2023, and the 12th SITE SANTA FE International in 2025. Most recently, this past January, his Connector series appeared in a New York group show at Bortolami alongside sculptor Diana Al-Hadid, in an exhibition built entirely around artists who avoid conventional paint: felt, velvet, soot, gypsum, engine oil. One reviewer singled out Zhang’s contribution as the standout of the room, describing its graphite surface as unexpectedly warm despite its bleak palette.

Connector, Time, and the Weight of Antiquity

The Hong Kong show pulls from two ongoing bodies of work. The Connector series, underway since 2022, produces large-scale, illusionistic abstractions built through repeated graphite application, darkening the felt in stages until the surface reads as something between an object and a field of pure material. The Time series, running since 2021, narrows the focus to tight close-ups of carved heads, referencing classical and Renaissance sculpture with a precision that traces directly back to Zhang’s academic training. Alongside these, the show includes new studies of classical statuary, continuing his long-standing habit of borrowing from biblical, mythological and antique source material and rendering it with a hallucinatory, almost over-focused clarity.

When the Surface Thinks at White Cube Hong Kong

When the Surface Thinks opens October 30, 2026, at White Cube Hong Kong, 50 Connaught Road Central, and runs through December 19. It is Zhang’s first solo presentation with the gallery, and the show’s premise, that a painted surface can register and reflect rather than simply depict, follows directly from the material logic he has been refining since his academic training in Shanghai and Paris.

Where Yunyao Zhang Stands Now

Zhang’s trajectory over the past five years traces a fairly direct line from independent Shanghai galleries to a major international program: Marguo in Paris, Bortolami in New York, and now White Cube in Hong Kong, layered on top of a growing string of European museum presentations. What hasn’t changed is the core material bet: that a surface which cannot be corrected says something a surface that can be corrected never will.

Yunyao Zhang: Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Yunyao Zhang?

Yunyao Zhang (also known as Zhang Yunyao, b. 1985, Shanghai) is a Paris-based painter known for working in graphite and pastel on felt rather than oil on canvas.

What materials does Zhang use, and why?

Zhang draws with graphite and pastel on felt, a material that is unabsorptive and does not allow overpainting or correction. Unlike oil on canvas, every mark becomes permanently embedded in the surface, which the artist connects to how memory itself resists revision.

What is When the Surface Thinks about?

The exhibition presents Zhang’s Connector series (large-scale illusionistic abstractions), his Time series (close-ups of carved heads referencing classical sculpture), and new studies of classical statuary, all working against the Soviet Realist and French Beaux-Arts training Zhang received in Shanghai and Paris.

Where and when can I see the exhibition?

When the Surface Thinks runs from October 30 through December 19, 2026, at White Cube Hong Kong, 50 Connaught Road Central.

Where else has Yunyao Zhang exhibited?

Zhang has shown at Perrotin Hong Kong, Galerie Marguo in Paris, the Lyon Biennale, the Musee Fenaille in Rodez (co-curated with the Louvre), the Musee des beaux-arts de Caen, the 12th SITE SANTA FE International, and, most recently, a group show at Bortolami in New York.

Who represents Yunyao Zhang?

Zhang is represented by Galerie Marguo in Paris and Don Gallery in Shanghai, alongside this new solo presentation with White Cube in Hong Kong.
